Can a REF*1W or REF*1L be used to pass the identification # of the insured's employer in the 835?
This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X091A1. The description for REF01 qualifier 1W is "Member identification Number". The description for REF01 qualifier 1L is "Group or Policy Number". These are very specific terms, and do not apply to an identification number for an employer. Using either of these qualifiers to send an empployer identification number would be inappropriate and not consistent with the guide instructions. This guide doesn't support any identification related to the insured's employer.
The workgroup suggests that the requestor either enter a DSMO request or bring the business rational for this need to the workgroup where we will talk about possible solutions for now and if this is something we need to add to the version of the guide moving forward.
