Annual Release
The EDI Standard is published once per year in January.
Proposed modifications to the current EDI Standard proceed through a series of ballots and must be approved by impacted subcommittees, the Technical Assessment Subcommittee (TAS), and the Accredited Standards Committee stakeholders in order to be included in the next publication.
EDI Standard Enumeration
At roughly 5 to 7 year intervals, X12's EDI Standard is vetted through a process maintained by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). When ANSI approves, the EDI Standard's version number is incremented. Each publication of X12's EDI Standard is enumerated with a six-digit identifier indicating the version, release. The first three digits are the version which spans a number of calendar years. The fourth and fifth digits are the release. The ANSI approved version is identified with a release of 00, thereafter the release is incremented each calendar year.
So, 007050 communicates that this version/release was published the 5th year after ANSI approved version 007, and that this is the annual release for that year.
The tables below depict the key dates for various steps in a normal modification/publication cycle. Note the milestone dates were adjusted at the end of 2017. Prior to 2017, the X12 standard included sub-releases published in June and October. Effective with version 007050, each annual release is published in January and contains all modifications approved in the previous calendar year.
